Death Date: April 29, 1967 -- Alva Cotten, age 67, a lifetime resident of Covington, died Saturday morning, April 29, at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville. He had been in ill health 20 years and seriously ill one year. Mr. Cotten was born Nov. 7, 1899, in Covington, the son of James and Sarah Cotten. He was married Sept. 1, 1919, to Nellie Darnell, who preceded him in death on March 25, 1965. He had been a janitor at the county courthouse in Covington for a number of years. Surviving are: three sons, James of Newtown, John of Covington and William of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah Jane Curtis of Martinsville, Ill., and Mrs. Pat Fletcher of Waterville, N. Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Nina Hodge of Danville, Ill., Mrs. Mary VanLeer of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Laura Wilson of Michigan City; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Freeman, who was killed in World War II. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hegg Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. Edgar Allen, pastor of the First Assembly of God church, officiated and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
